Signing up for Medicare can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know about Medicare enrollment, including the different enrollment periods, what each part of Medicare covers, and tips for choosing the right plan for your healthcare needs. Whether you're newly eligible or looking to change your plan, Green Insurance Agency is here to help.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your Initial Enrollment Period lasts seven months, starting three months before the month you turn 65 and ending three months after. This is the best time to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B to ensure your coverage starts as early as possible.
If you sign up during the first three months, your coverage typically starts the month you turn 65. Signing up later in the IEP may delay your coverage start date.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. During this time, you can switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (or vice versa), change Medicare Advantage plans, join or switch Part D prescription drug plans, and drop or add coverage.
Changes made during AEP take effect January 1 of the following year. This is an ideal time to review your current coverage and compare available options.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)
You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you experience certain life events, such as losing employer coverage, moving to a new area, qualifying for Medicaid, or entering a nursing facility. SEPs allow you to make changes to your Medicare coverage outside the standard enrollment windows.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
From January 1 to March 31 each year, individuals enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare and join a standalone Part D plan.
Late Enrollment Penalties
If you don't sign up for Medicare when you're first eligible and don't have qualifying coverage, you may face late enrollment penalties. The Part B penalty adds 10% to your premium for each 12-month period you delayed enrollment. The Part D penalty is calculated based on the number of months you went without creditable drug coverage.
Green Insurance Agency helps you understand these deadlines so you can avoid unnecessary penalties. Our agents in Orange Park, FL, are available year-round to answer your questions and guide you through enrollment.
